Im having the same issue with the oil light flickering at idle sometimes as well, along with the car dieing out when the clutch is pushed in coming to a stop, and a power loss and no real transition into vtec. I did a compression check the other day, turned out fine. Would this rule out the main or rod bearings?

No, the compression check just tells you about the condition of your rings and valve seats.

Would a leak down tell me about the rest then?

no that would tell you if air is leaking from your rings, or intake and or exhaust valves.
the mechanic probably dropped the pil pan and inspected the rod bearings and then the mains. or at least around the mains

If it ever ran low on oil or maybe contaminates in the oil could have caused premature wear. Not to mention 9k RPM is enough to wear out anything faster...
