Default oil level / how to read dip stick question

i check my oil level today, and i would like to know the following questions:

there are hash marks, 1 hash mark is equal to how many qrts of oil? ( between the L and H)

i recently changed my oil, checked the oil level cold ( without cycling by starting the motor into the oil filter yet) was all the way to the high mark.

after running the car and later checked again was down to 3 hash marks on one side, 2 on the other side ... am i still okay or need to add oil
i have a 2005 s2k

the sides on the dip stick, are the supposed to be the same? if so, what am i not doing it right to get the same hash mark on both side --- dumb question

please lmk, thx

ALL of the "hash marks" (or X's) equal ONE QUART. I believe there are 5 X's, so each one would be 1/5 qt.
Checking the oil after an oil change is particularly difficult as the oil is cool and won't flow down into the oilpan efficiently. It is also not easy because the new oil filter you've put on won't be filled with oil yet. Once you start the engine right after an oil change, the oil filter fills up BUT all the oil just got churned up and won't fall back down into the oilpan well since it's still cool.
The trick is to dump the old oil and filter, put on a new filter, plug the drain hole and put 5 qts. of oil into the engine. You must have faith that this is enough (for now), but check the dipstick just to make sure you see oil in the hash marks (it might be a little over at this time) just in case you did something silly like leave the drain plug off or the oil filter off or loose when you poured oil back in.
Drive the car around like you normally would that day. Then, first thing the next morning, do an oil check before starting the motor and top up at that time.

Amazing how many people don't quite have this oil checking business down, so I posted up a procedure here:

No. You may see a difference of as much as 1-X, maybe slightly more if you didn't allow for drain time. My linked post gives you an indication of how to minimize this difference. Take the side that's the lowest reading.
