Default Oil in Hood Liner

I've got oil in my hood liner and I can't find the source. I took it to a local quick lube that I trust, but it's overfilled. It looks to have blown up into the hood from the back half of the engine compartment, but the engine is clean. It's not insubstantial either. With the hood up, it's dripping enough to form a puddle at both sides of the hood, on the clutch master cylinder and on the paint just outside the rubber seal. Help a non-mechanic dude find the source. Then, off to to oil change guys to pay for the damage (presuming overfill caused it).

Is it possible the engine was run with the oil fill cap off?

Nope, but that's what the result looks like.

Check the dip stick to see if its over-filled. Maybe they ran the car with the oil cap off.

It is overfilled.

I'm leaning towards them starting it with the cap off. Nothing else is adding up.

Have you had the car rust-proofed recently ?

I think I figured this out. There was some commotion from the bay and a quick motor shutdown. I was on my phone and didn't pay much attention. They were all looking at me, but I didn't see anything abnormal because I wasn't paying attention. My guess is that they started it with the cap off, blew a bunch of oil up that absorbed into the liner and then slightly overfilled in a bit of a panic to compensate for the loss. I'll know on Monday when the owner reviews the bay cameras. In any case, they've been very gracious and have agreed to make it right including cleaning my garage. Thanks for all the input!

Your fatal mistake. Stay far far far away. I don't even like to drive by quick lube shops, much less into them.

+1. Stay away from these places. They don't pay workers much, so you end up with rejects that can't find a better job. Plenty of horror stories. Plenty which end with shop denying blame and refusing to pay for their error.

Consider yourself fortunate that they claim they are going to take care of it.

But hold on, you went to a quick change oil place, and there was a comotion under the hood, and they all looked at you, and you didn't think to inquire what happened?
