I just use a strap style wrench. I got the one that is supposed to work on the new filter and it is good sometimes, sometimes does not work well at all (variance in the filters). So I always just go back to the standard old strap style wrench and turn it 7/8 turn like honda says.

Honda filter tool does not work on 306 filter. There is a generic filter socket on Amazon that people have found fits. Don't know part number, but its in this or some other thread.

I still have a stash of original filter so my oem tool still working

I have the one that is supposed to work. I find it works so so at best. I just went back to the strap wrench (metal band strap wrench)

The one with the closest fit to the fluted edge diameter, the top of the housing too shallow. So, a typical torque or ratchet wrench bottoms out on the top of the filter. The wrench slips on the flutes, as it doesn't sit far enough down onto the filter.

PITA.

yep I have one that does that, and then I got another that seems a tad deeper but it does not fit so well. And any variance in the filters is enough to make or break the fit

Yeah, it's a little fiddly to get the wrench into position to tighten the filter. Plus...no way to hook up a torque wrench. May not work for everyone.

The tq on this does not have to be so specific that doing it by the 7/8 turn method is going to cause an issue. I am not concerned in the least about not using a tq wrench on it. If Honda thought that 7/8 turn was not within the tolerance they accepted for this application they would not provide it as an option. So I am fine with using the strap wrench and doing it via those instructions.

Sure, but it takes a little finesse to know 7/8 turn from what point. And it also counts on the user to start and stop the "clock" in the right spot.

The torque procedure is absolutely finite. I always champion the sure thing.

Anyway, this thread is about finding the right oil filter wrench for the stupid new filter. Hopefully OP finds what he's looking for.

I just use the "old" wrench with some cunning.
