started an oil change at 4:00, drained the old oil, went to remove the old oil filter, and no joy. The wrench just keeps slipping, by now I have stripped the filter of all paint. I am seriously stuck if I can't get the oil change done soon. I would hate to waste 5 quarts of redline oil by having to dump it in with an old filter. Any idea how to get it loose?

Thanks.

Rubber palmed work gloves, a jack, jack stands and a lot of strength. Or, a large pipe wrench.

It sounds like you might be using one of those compression band filter wrenchs, you may want to make sure that you have it on the right way, it should tighten as you turn it counter clock-wise(for removal). You may also want to try the cup type filter wrench that is fit your filter size and uses a ratchet or breaker bar for the handle (available at almost any autoparts store).

Drive a screwdriver through it and use it for leverage.

Get an oil filter wrench of this design (usally less than $10.00 at any local auto store):

and you will solve your problem.

Now, I hope you didn't screw the new one on so tight this time.

Or by driving a screwdriver through the new one to tighten it.

Why did you do that? I thought that was a serious suggestion and I did it. I filled her up and decided to take her for a spin. But after driving for a couple of minutes my engine seized up and now it won't start, it just makes funny noises.

fperra, love the screwdriver idea. Long time ago I had a problem filter and ended up going to a parts store for another wrench. That would have saved me a trip.

A trick I learned many (too many to think about) years ago. It can get messy though. Better to have a good oil filter wrench arround.
