i've driven without the oil cap. biggest worry is splashing oil. do the tests, fill with oil, and drive. should be fine.

Having the cap off won't prevent oil pressure from building. Under the valve cover is a free flowing area for oil, it sees very little pressure if any at all. If you were to screw in a gauge into the oil cap with it installed, I'd be willing to bet that you wouldn't even be able to get a reading.
0 psig is a reading
If the valve cover was pressurized significantly, the dipstick would pop out.
Sorry....a POSITIVE reading..... SHANKS I agree though, although at times at extremely high RPM some people HAVE experience dipstick pop out from pressure, but it's a momentary thing that doesn't happen at a constant.

Okay, I'll go ahead and mention the elephant in the room.

The DEALER serviced this? Why have you not gone back to complain about this????

I work in an automotive shop, I've seen people come back and complain because their seat was moved!

I'm not saying go in there and start ripping faces off like that movie face off, but you need to bring it to their attention. Clearly Honda Express lube was being lazy that day. What if they had forgotten the oil? What if they forgot to tighten "that wheel"?

You need to let them know of this, you got off easy, other people might not be so lucky.

I agree 100%. Make your problem be known with Honda at the least. I'd be willing to bet they'd give you your next oil change for free because of the screw up. Doesn't hurt to ask err demand.

I would certainly go back in person to complain to the head of the service department. And screw going back there, even for a complimentary "we're sorry" oil change.

A guy that I went to high school with worked at a Havoline. Forgot to put the drain bolt back in, dumped 5 quarts on the floor straight through the engine, and drove the car out of the garage bay. Engine seized, he got fired, and the shop closed a few weeks later. Now its a Firestone... I still don't go there for anything. Bottom line is, the employer needs to know that one of their employees made the mistake and take corrective action. If it goes unannounced, it could happen much worse to someone else.

Glad everything is OK with yours though man! I personally would go ahead and do a fresh oil change now. No telling what kind of road dusts could have dropped down into your engine from the open cap hole.

From a quality control standpoint, I'm surprised that those guys don't use checklists.

This story just re-affirms why I do all my own oil changes.

Right on. People think I'm crazy but if you want it done right. Forget that $24.99 special.

I've seen cracked oil pans due to over tightening of the drain bolt, no oil placed back into the car ... it's crazy.
