oil cooler question

For the folks out there that have installed oil coolers.
Did you leave the stock liquid oil cooler(warmer) on provided that you had enough room after a turbo installation, or took it off?
Also did you run an oil thermostat?
I had installed an oil cooler in the past but didn't get a chance to test for oil temperature reductions and/or efficiency before I took it off and sold it. But I probably need to install one soon again. So I am trying to find out the most efficient setup here with the least amount of plumbing needed.
I've heard some people running w/o thermostats. I personally had installed one in my setup but if it doesn't make that much difference i won't.
