Default Oil Change - Smoke and Vtec not pulling as well

Hey all,

I got an oil change on my 06 with 5500miles yesterday. I used Motul 8100 5W-40. The shop told me they spilled a little oil on the exhaust so it may smoke a bit..... It was smelling bad after the oil change but the smell for the most part went away after a short drive and it wasn't really smoking. During the short drive after the oil change I just drove it conservatively, didn't really hit vtec.

Today I really pulled it in second and third gear and It started to smoke a little from under the hood and I'm worried why it has started to smoke again....also Vtec wasn't pulling as smoothly as it was before...it seemed to struggle a bit (maybe just in my head )... Smoke seems to be coming from around where the header is...... Did he use the right oil weight? This is the first oil change since getting the car about 600miles ago...

Thanks for all your help!

Have you inspected under the hood yet?

Check to see if the cap is on and tight, also check the oil filter too.
Look around for the spill.
Check oil level.

10W-30 is what is recommend on my 06.

^ like he said, check oil level and make sure everything is sealed tight.

probably just oil burning off (it takes a while).

Everytime I bring my car to the garage I feel like it's been molested.

Make sure they tightened the oil filter properly, Honda wants a 7/8's turn not the typical half turn most do.

I checked the oil level, it's all good. Not sure about the filter, I guess I got to get under the car for that. But lets say its not as tight as it should be, would that have an effect on how the car drives? Also is 5w40 the right synthetic weight to use? Like Supra-Holic said, manufacturer recommends 10W-30

Although I doubt 5w40 would cause any harm for your car, 10w30 is whats written on the oil cap and thats what I use for my car.

You don't have to go under the car for the oil filter. You can reach it. Its right behind the Air Filter box. You can't miss it. Be careful though, it might be really hot after a drive.

Awesome, I'll check it out when the engine is cold. I did a quick search on this forum, seems like a lot of those who use Motul 8100 are using the weight 5W-40.... Stumped as to how it works, since the manufacturer recommends 10W-30.

Some use 0w30 or 40. The different between 30 and 40 are insignificant really. Most guys in the north use 10w30 in the summer and 10w40 in winter, the variance really isn't enough for concern. If you live in Nevada and it was 104 degrees I'd say get the 10w30, you live in Maine 10w40 or 5w40.

Improperly tightened oil filters have resulted in a few carbecues. Check it before you drive it any further and re-read stitos2k's previous post.

A higher viscosity oil will cause some power loss and los of fuel economy. Sometimes it's fairly noticeable. I suspect that what you replaced was a 10W-30 or maybe even the OEM fill which can both be quite a bit lower in viscosity than the 5W-40 Motul you put in. Did you check your filter yet? Did you use the correct filter?

Drive the Motul until your next oil change and then put in a 10W-30 to see which you like more. Your car will be fine until then.
