Thumbs up Oil change Now Ticking

Just bought an 04 with 35K on it. Did my first oil change now I have a ticking sound at Idle. It stops if I increase RPM up to 2K. Did changing oil type\weight have anything to do with this? I have no idea what was in it. Do the valves need to be adjusted?

What oil weight did you put in it?

Are you sure the level is correct?

some oils are thinner than others even when comparing the same viscosity weights. If the old oil was left in too long it may have thickened up, or they may have been running a thicker viscosity oil in it before.

The ticking sound is somewhat normal for these engines due to drivetrain design, it gets worse as the valve clearnaces open up. It will get quieter when you run a thicker viscosity oil but it is always there to some degree. Your car is probably too low mileage to worry about valve clearance adjustment at this point. Mine runs very quiet with 5w40 Amsoil oil in it, it gets louder with conventional 10w30 in it. There is no harm in the noise being present, it's just a matter of whether you like or dislike the noise.

If it starts to get really loud and starts sounding like a baseball card in the spokes of a bicycle tire then it could be the timing chain tensioner going bad which is a common issue on the s2k.

he, he, he, lol, thanks very much , all the best to the U.S. too !. Yeah all we have to look forward to in this country is a good hockey game match, in conjunction with some cold beer. It would be nice if we could get one more gold medal for our men's hockey. I don't think the U.S. would miss one gold medal should we happen to win as they have barrel loads already. But if we don't win I'll be cheering for the 'mericans as my second choice. Lovin the Olympics though.

J.W.

I have a AP2 2007 which is using 5.1 quarts of Amsoil 10W-30 synthetic oil. I have a ticking sound at idle that starts when the ambient temperature drops below 35F (~1.7C). When I hold the rev counter at 3K and release, the ticking sound subsides for 2-3 seconds at idle. After that time, the sound returns. I have made the assumption that the injectors operating around and below freezing temps tick. As others have stated, our engines have normal valve train noise.

In my situation; the ticking noise is not always proportional with camshaft rotations.

Is your abnormal ticking present at higher ambient temps?
