Before making any sort of lengthy trip where you may be away from home and services, you should always top the oil up to the "FULL" mark on the dipstick. Although it is safe to run the engine with the oil anywhere in the "X's", you should do a cursory inspection of any vehicle before a trip. Part of this inspection is to make sure all fluids are in good order - oil, coolant, brake/clutch fluid, tire pressures, washer fluid.
