Oil Change....Beaten to death
Another Oil Change question.
People always advice you to change your oil after 3k miles or 3 months (or similar). I know the oil gets dirty after usage, but what is the significance of the time? If you don't drive the car, what happens to the oil after that length of time (3 months or whatever)?
I've had my car for almost 8 months now, and it has less than 2k miles. Should I change the oil or what? I added some a couple months ago because the dipstick level dropped a little. But it hasn't changed much since then. Neither has the color changed.

Good luck finding a definitive technical answer to this one. It may well be that the best reason to change your oil at a specified time interval (rather than miles) is to remove any potential warranty gotchas.

I have recently changed a Mobil 1 fill at 7500 miles after a combination of country road, race track, and highway driving, and the oil still looked like brand new, a very clear amber.
I am sure that there were microscopic contaminants in this oil but based upon the clarity of the oil, it seemed as though another 5K miles were very possible.
How can you visually determine when enough is enough for your oil?

I had Mobil 1 put in my car in mid-November when it was then garaged for the winter. I started driving the car again in late April and finally changed oil in July. I only had 2,000 miles on the oil (no track events) but it did sit there for quite some time between 2 and 4 week periods when it was started for 45 minutes or more.
During the oil change, I noticed that the old oil was completely black and scary looking. I wonder if the dealer really put Mobil 1 in or just faked it. I have done my own oil changes ever since.
Is it possible for Mobil 1 to get like that after 6 months and only 2,000 miles?

If you're really not sure, I would just play it safe and change it anyways. It's really a small price to pay to prevent something catastrophic from happening.
