CoralDoc,

You've got my attention. After 85k miles of oil changes, I can't tell you what my cap's threads look like. I must go out an check my oil cap a little more closely later today. I'll post my findings sometime today.

Wonder if this comes from over-tightening?

Sorry, I can't.

Please inspect your oil cap and let me know if anyone else is experiencing this issue.
I just checked mine. No problems. I would not be concerned with blocking oil passages. The particals should just drain into the sump.

I've got two.. one rattled between the bellhousing and firewall for awhile, but both are just fine.

BTW, is it just indiscriminate buying that keeps the price up on aluminum caps, or is there some sort of difficult manufacturing (that I don't understand) that keeps the price up?

When I lost my first one they tried to sell me one for $60 at the track.. I passed and used a rag to cover the hole and get me home. (Even though the SRP is ~$10, by local dealer demanded $17 for one.. and then they wonder why there is no trust!)

Based on the direction of breakage, I would say the plastic has failed from overtightening. It is not from material degredation.

Unfortunately we put them on pretty tight because of owners reporting some of them loosening up.

I would think they would melt long before that.
