OK, so some hopefully constructive advice:
You're going to need to get the car to someone who understands S2000s and who can inspect the valve train with a keen eye. That person needs to be able to see the difference between a bad retainer from a good one. He'll need to know why the compression and leak down is not up to snuff and go from there. He'll then need the expertise to remove the head and do valve work and adjusting. He'll need to recognize if something is wrong with the piston when he sees it. Then he should be smart enough to check his work by seeing what the compression is for an engine with the kind of compression ratio an S2000 has.
A compression of 140 may be quite acceptable for a '65 Plymouth Valiant and maybe he thought the numbers for the other cylinders were "really, really" spectacular.

Address the over-rev problem first and foremost. Don't let the next guy give you a new rear diff or a tranny overhaul becasue they think these will make your car run better and you'll forget all about the engine problems.

Well, --- My car had an over-rev.. I had it towed to the Service station. Got opinion number 1.. They wanted to charge me 3400 for clutch / flywheel work. Had them do a compression test after them telling me the engine was fine.. 40psi to cylinder 4.. That's when I had it towed half-way across town to a guy that's been working on Honda for 20 years ( a friend of my Mother's fiancee ). He fixed the clutch without having to replace the flywheel and got the compression to my 4th cylinder back to 140psi and told me the car would run fine ( after paying 1400 ). I'm not a mechanic, and so I took the advice of a Mechanic. Now, i'm back to square one and being criticized for my mistake.
Deano, your first priority needs to be figuring out who you can trust. Anything that comes from the Web is suspect, but I promise you, XViper, Wisconsin, Billman, and SlowS2k won't steer you wrong. They are the people I count on when I have issues I can't figure out myself, and I know from experience that they are all reliable.

What you need is someone near you who is equally reliable. I think it was XViper who first suggested that you go to your regional forum and ask about mechanics in your area. The guys here will help you find the help you need, if you work with them.

Both our local Honda dealers have S2000 specialists who have been trained specifically to work on our cars. This is not just another Honda, and Honda experience does not qualify one to work on the S2000, so you need more than just a mechanic or Honda mechanic. You need an S2000 mechanic, and a good one who has seen this kind of thing before. Until you find that you are probably going to continue to have trouble. Listen to the experts here, because they really are experts on the very car you're dealing with.

Wisconsin has also said, "Post in your regional forum here, and ask for a reputable honda dealership. Take your car there."

All I can add to that is ...

Post in your regional forum here, and ask for a reputable honda dealership. Take your car there.

That is the BEST advice you're going to get, and the only way you're going to solve your problems, so just do it.

XViper, Wisconsin, et al, where does Deano live? I checked his profile, and didn't find any location information. It could be that he lives within a reasonable distance of one of us or someone we know.

Deano, where are you located?

I'm fairly new to the forums here, but im here everyday after classes reading about this machine. And though im fairly shy to post, (until i get my S2000 IQ a little bit higher) I can tell you, with that search button and just reading every mechanical post about the car, its trials, and mistrials (something i think that you should do). Wisconsin, Slows2k, billman, redmx5, xviper are all EXTREMELY knowledgable. In every post that i have read nearly all of them chime in with their two cents, and it tends to be the same, which means that they are usually right. I say trust them. To them, and i wish they lived in my city, so when i get my S, i could bug them.

With my last bit of advice, I'll say something that my dad has told me since I was a kid, "Do things right the first time, and you'll never have to do them again. And "The Lazy always work double" (pay double in this case)

I wish you luck with this buddy. And I think maybe you should take a bit of time to understand and respect this car, its really quite fascinating once you learn about it, this really isn't just another Honda.

you guys are too harsh, even billman said to get it done anyways. give him a break, its not like hes losing his ticket to heaven cause he isn't a mechanic, and is accustomed to the fact taht a majority of mechanics out there don't know what they're doing and will rip you off so easily.

deano, youll get it all squared away eventually. dont take the criticism from some ppl, they just love doing it to anyone.

At this point:

You should be arguing with the mechanic that sold you a clutch when you 100%, beyond a shadow of a doubt, needed engine work.
