Where are you making the observation from? Because 80% of the time when I'm in my car top up top down hardtop on the car sounds different and I don't like it all I hear is the rasp from the exhaust. However from the outside of my car like when the wife is driving it away or I'm following I love the sound it's 100% what I want. Perspective can change things.

Observing from interior with softtop up, top down, hardtop, all the variables, even heard the car from outside, so I know for a fact the tone is different. It just sounds like a chevy cavalier with a weld on muffler, just deep/bassy monotone noise, and none of that "s2k noise" haha. If that makes sense.

Weird. And you say it has a testpipe, what specific exhausts have you tried?

Weren't the S2000 engines all hand built? I would imagine that no two S2Ks will sound exactly alike, even with all other possiblities being equal. As mentioned, sound in versus out makes a big difference as well, not to mention environment aspects.

The engines were hand assembled, but not hand built. Robots did the machine work. And the engines were already assembled and attached to the transmissions and lifted into the chassis at the assembly plant.

I too noticed a difference in exhaust note on 2 of my S' with both exhaust (muffler delete and weld-in pipes/tips) being the same. Not as drastic as you describe, but my 02 was higher pitched (stock airbox, modified) than my 01' (FIPK ver 2). I attribute it to the intake.

i have the challenge 76ta-r the s with a resonator will keep the tone deeper. try the ta-r or if your daring the ta-rm and yeah i think you'll get the higher tone you are looking for regardless of your interesting problems. All those exhaust you listed I think carry a deeper tone by tradition.
