Occasional gear grind when shifting
I would say about every 500 shifts or so, for whatever reason, like shifting a touch too fast, too sloppy, not paying attention, whatever, I'll grind the gears on an upshift.
Sometimes it's just a very slight grind where I'll back out immediately, depress clutch again and then go into gear and other times, it'll be a bit more significant grind where I'll be trying to get it into gear with a touch more force and it'll grind.
It's not a constantly reoccuring thing, I don't think it has to do with the gearbox as it shifts perfectly after that and it's a very rare occurance, so it's just my own stupidity or lack of paying attention.
So, how bad is it really? I would imagine a microscopic amount of metal is shaved off the teeth and I would HOPE there is a magnet at the bottom of the gearbox that collects the metal shavings? Also, I would hope and imagine that Honda built occasional grinds into the design of the gearbox, so it won't eventually require replacement after 50,000 miles or something?
Anyway, just curious because even though I'm leasing this car and will give it back at 36k, I just don't like 'abusing' cars. I run my car hard and redline it frequently, but do take care of it with synthetic oil changes, warming it up before flogging it, etc.

...However, most of the time when it happens, I'm not paying attention to my shifting so I don't have a clue where I went wrong. I do find that I am more likely to mess up a shift when I'm shifting at lower revs, in slow moving traffic, and I suspect it's always a matter of bad timing.
These things happen. My tranny seems to be very forgiving so far.

Good to see and hear that a 2000 MY car is still holding up. I figure it will be fine, but the noise is not appealing.
To answer the question, it's typically because of inattention or lazy shifting. Guess it won't blow up on me.

It is simply the way this transmission operates, although it is not obvious with cooler temps. When the ambient temp is over 95F, or the transmission is overheated from hard low gear running or continuous high speed running, it grinds. Nothing you can do under those conditions but slow the shifts. I don't expect grinds as seldom as you are reporting will make any difference in 36K miles.
