Default OBDII Scan Tool

I have a basic actron scantool. It always says link error. But it works on other cars. It did this on my 06 si aswell. Do i need to get a updated scan tool? I went to autozone and advanced auto parts and they all use the same scan tool and it says the same thing. My car is 06 so maybe its the ecu or something. HELP. Thanks

You need a scan tool that is extended CAN capable. Most cheap/inexpesive scanners don't have this. Nothing wrong with the car, just your scanner doesn't know how to communicate with it.

My Autoxray does canbus. Wasn't that expensive, couple hundred or so.

I have been trying to figure out the difference between CAN and Extended CAN. As far as I can tell the CAN protocol can be implemented at either 250 or 500 kbps. I don't know if this is the distinction. I have also noticed that "old" CAN uses an 11bit header whereas "new" CAN uses a 29bit header. According to some sites I have seen on the internet the newer Honda's use the 29bit header flavor of CAN, so I'm assuming for now the 29bit header may be what defines "extended" CAN.

I have also been reading up on the HIM (Honda Interface Module) and the new SAE-J2534 standard for aftermarket vehicle interface. Basically right now with a HIM ($750.00 I think) and a laptop running the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) software (I have seen it as low $100.00 on ebay for current versions) you can have the same access as dealerships do to the ABS, EPS, SRS, Immobilizer too (not necessarily good). I am uncertain if a J2534 pass-thru interface will function the same as a HIM. I have learned that Honda has a proprietary pinout on the serial cable used with HIM.
