notchy 2nd when cold, powertrain warranty?

It is pretty normal for the S to be notchy when cold. Have you changed and bled the clutch fluid? It is easy to foget and if it hasn't been changed in 6 plus years that will not help matters.

Does the greasing of the shifter really do anything? It seems the effect would be minimal. My car takes considerably more effort to change into 2nd and 4th than it does to shift to 3rg or 5th. I saw the DIY for the shifter re-grease, but it seems to me the problem is more likely in the tranny itself. Any thoughts?

Definitely normal to be notchy when cold. You may want to regrease your shifter to help as you have already done a transmission fluid change. Also, timing your shifting will help.

grease everything. trust me it will make a difference, takes less than 10 mins to do. Also grease the slave ball under the car. If it has never been done, I can guarantee there is either no grease or it is dried up metal on metal contact.

Double clutching when cold helps a lot (push in the clutch - go to neutral - let out clutch - push in clutch and then shift. It helps to keep revs up and not let them drop while working the double-clutch). Additionally (as posted before and recommended by Billman), let the revs go up to at least 4,500 before shifting into second and third - not a fast/hard rev (especially while the engine and trans are cold), just a slow smooth rev up to around 4,500 before shifting seems to solve the problem if you don't want to double-clutch.
