I always thought my 1-2 and 2-3 were notchy, but after tweaking my shifting technique I've seemed to eliminate the notch all together (except when it's cold).

Might sound too simple, and probably won't help the majority of you, but analyzing your shifting technique might be a place to start.

If you have the original fluid in there from 2001, change it out with some new honda MTF, or alternatively some Penzoil Syncromesh.

My '01 is smooth as snot, maybe because it only has 5800 miles on it And a fresh fluid change.

I've got the notchy, and it really only happens when I shift below 3K; which I tend too.

I have had two situations where the shifter feels like it's got into gear and hasn't. That results in me buzzing the gears. This has only happened on 3rd and 5th. Both in very different situations.

3rd regular driving
5th spirited highway merge

I'm actually not sure what's up with the tranny. Everything is otherwise great.

lol@thread.

At first I was wondering WTF only 8K miles on an 01??? then I noticed the date...

Btw, IF you DC 1-2 shift, it will considerably lessen the notchy shift.

Call me crazy, but more than just me will attest to it fixing the problem.

My theory (as an engineer, you always need a theory... but this is a after the fact theory a possible explanation for why it works)
is:
1) it gives the input shaft time to slow down, so just shifting it to N, then waiting a sec, then popping it into 2 might work just as well
or
2) it forcibly slows the ip shaft down when you clutch out in N since the engine revs drop.
or
3) a mixture of 1&2.

Btw, fresh TF is a must for silky smooth shifting... I <3 Redline MTL, others love Honda MTF, GM Friction Modified Syncromesh, Redline MT-90...

Just try a few, pick one that fits YOU & your climate & your driving habits...and you'll love the s2k shifting action.

EDIT: I got teh f00l3d by the dug up thread.

I actually had 1-2, 2-3 grinding in my MY06. Dealer replaced synchros. Now it's great. I always use "new" Honda MTF every 10k miles or so.

This transmission is a little notchy to begin with. If you want some real "notch" or very mechanical feel, get yourself a short shifter. Depends on what you like, but I love the raw feel of the trans.

I just had the diff & trans fluids changed last week hoping to make some improvement. Shifts exactly the same :-/

Warming up doesn't fix the problem either. It's persistent regardless of temp. Still tries to kick back into my palm when going into 3rd at a low RPM.

Shifting analysis or not... the last 2 S2000's I had did not exhibit this problem, thus my frustration with this 2003 version with only 30K miles on it.

The 3rd gear kickback happens occasionally to me as well but only at lower rpm's...curious would stiffer motor and tranny mounts fhx this ? less slop and vibration smoother shift ? just a thought ?
