The problem with the soft top installations is that very few poeple will pay the price to do it right by an experienced tech. Every one wants to save money on the installation and its a world of you get what you pay for. If you have ever done a top and relize how much work it is you would see why it take $800 in labor. Like Billman says, "everything" in the back has to come out. The springs, cables and straps have to be installed correctly or it looks like s@*t and it will not fold correctly.

Hey now I think I did mine right! Granted, your feedback with some better methods was greatly appreciated, but I think I did it...mostly...right! It's still perfect 5 months later!

And, yes, a top replacement is $800+ in labor, easy. There's a bit of complexity to it, and if you lack the proper tools or experience, you could ruin a top, erasing any savings you thought you would get. I'm not REALLY experienced (not my day job), but I've been working on cars a long time.
