Sounds like timing - you may be "off a tooth" on the timing chain, or if you rotated the timing gears, you did not get back to TDC, and are 180 degrees off. I have done both, having been tired. I thought about it overnight in both cases, woke up early in the a.m. and had everything running smoothly within 2.5 hours.

In both cases, it was a customer's car, the last one a slipped timing belt on a Miata, and it was a judgement call on which tooth lined up at TDC, and I chose poorly. Had a lot of re do, but once it was running like a top, attitude improved.
