this happens to me alot too. the engine feels it's trying to rev up but something's holding it. then it just jumps up

Maybe a bad tank of gas?

If I understand your symptoms correctly, you're saying that you appear to have really poor low-end torque. Without throwing a CEL, I'd think that possible reasons would be bad gas, heat bog, possibly a dirty air filter or a stuck parking brake.

Other less-likely culprits: low tire pressure, and an out-of-calibration butt-dyno.

Yup, correct symptom diagnosis. My power curve usually feels very smooth, except when it explodes at VTEC. Starting yesterday, my low-end torque just wasn't there..but everything else was fine.
