I'm also having a similar problem. Mine sounds like a metallic rattle coming from the engine until 3 bars on the temp gauge. Mostly noticeable when I get to about 3k rpm. Have you figured anything out yet?

It's going in for a diagnostics tomorrow. Noise has been there for quite a while now and reckon if anything was going to give then it would of by now. I'm not the most switched on with engines and after a listen with my brother he reckons top end. But need a garage to take a look to hopefully get a definite answer so I can move on and get it fixed. Has to be internal as the lack of power is terrible. Will keep this thread posted

Just got it back from the garage. They reckon it's the chain and guides. I disagree because it a nose more from the rear of the engine, just strange because the noise has been there a while and the car is lacking on power. Strip down next I think

Check your valve lash before you start tearing things apart.

Piston slap is quite common, the engine isn't meant to take a lot of load when cold, things only reach proper tolerances when fully warm.

Start by checking valve clearances and a good visual inspection of the valvetrain. I wouldn't touch anything internally with the engine. Many people fail to torque the valve adjuster nuts to spec when they perform valve adjustments, one could be loose or broken.

Sounds like it *could* be cold piston slap but I'm actually leaning more towards a knock. A better video is in order. Or just take it to me or Billman.

That's piston slap, most definitely. It can be compared to a "diesel" sound until the engine gets warm.

Only time I hear it on my car ('03) is when it idles and I'm in a drive through with the engine not completely warmed up.

On the '95 Integra GS-R I had, it was very prominent on a particular hill I had to climb every day on my way to work.

I've heard it way louder on other Honda motors, worst was a F22 in an gen 5 Accord, it had ~330k on it, all high speed highway, and when the guy started local driving it, cold it sounded as if it would blow up once hot it was quiet as a mouse.

There's other makes that I hear it quite loud, GM LS engines, Ford 5.4 modular motors and many Toyota engines.

Knock was my first thought, but he said it has been there for a while, how long could one drive with that type of knock?
