new-used car oil change +maintenance
Hi,
I just recentlly picked up a '00 that was pretty much sitting for years- it had only 4000 miles when I got it.
First of all I've since put some miles on it, and am ready for its first oil change. Any suggestions on what's best to use. Is synthetic really worth the extra cash? I live in Florida, and was planning on adopting the "hot climates" maintenance schedule and changing every 3- 4000 miles. Does anybody have any oppinion on Semi-synthetic oil? its cheaper- but is it legit? How often do you guys change your oil? I've heard that its best to stick to an oil brand once you start using it- but I plan on doing all of the maintenance myself- and not really use "honda"oil.
Also as the car has been sitting for a while what other maintenance would you suggest ?
Thanks for any help.

You should really get yourself an owner's manual or even better yet, a Helm service manual to tell you what to do and how to do it.
With an '00 and only still 4000 miles, you should stick with dino oil till about 10K miles when the oil consumption will have tapered off a bit. This engine can use oil at an alarming rate when you drive it in VTEC a lot so check it often. Then at about 10K miles, you can consider going to synthetic. I wouldn't mess with a blend. Either go with full or don't bother. Go with oil changes at the recommended 3750 mile intervals till you get to synthetic, then you can get away with 5000 miles intervals with new filter everytime.
A partial list of things to do for an '00:
-tranny fluid
-diff fluid
-clutch fluid
-brake fluid
-engine coolant flush and change
-engine air filter?
-HVAC air filter?
-CV boot and steering rod boot lube (silicone spray)
-soft top treatment
-window and windshield seal treatment
-rear plastic window polish and clean and protection
-check for spark plug recall (new type of plugs and higher torque)
This is all I can think of for now and there may be more.
Here is a thread will all kinds of "How To's" for things you can do yourself:
