New s2000 owner - shift gate clunky?
#22
Oh...seems wayyy too low on miles for me warrant taking out the transmission right now.
Anybody provide inside on how to adjust the clutch freeplay? I've read a few posts but they all seem extremely confusing. I'm pretty good with mechanics, but there didn't seem to be a clear description on how to adjust the free play.

Having driven the car more now, this is what my symptoms are:
1. Car off - engine cold/warm (doesn't matter) - gears slide in and out without any issue if I go in order from 1-6. I know i'm in gear cause the shifter stops moving. If i skip around, it might get caught up once in a while.
2. Car moving - upshift. I can almost feel every gear "bite" going up - not a grind feeling but sorta like the teeths don't come in exactly flush with each other.
3. Car moving - downshift. Almost all shifts going down are smooth like as if the engine is off.
All the time - coming out of a gear is completely smooth and friction-free.
Any idea what else I can be doing here?

I've tried lots of methods to reduce it. I now tend to start off in second for the first few pull aways (drops in nicely without too much clutch drag) and just add a delay of about half a second or so when going from 2->3 (just pause mid change). When it's loosens up a bit I go back to starting in first and add a similar delay going from 1->2 and this seems to work smoothly most of the time. I've never had to 'molly coddle' a car so much but it's the only annoying thing about an otherwise great car.
If you ever get to a solution I'd love to hear it, but it seems to be a general issue better in some and worse in others. We seem to be in the latter camp.
What's funny is that if you are 'going for it', hard acceleration and high rpm, it all seems to work perfectly... it's probably a ploy to make you drive them how they were designed to be driven. ;-)
