Default New S2000 owner with a problem.. Help !

Hi All

Two days ago I finally took the plunge and bought an S2000 after admiring them for many years...

It's a 1999 AP1 with 77k miles

I have owned sporty cars in the past ( Porsche 911SC, Porsche Boxster, Alfa Romeo Spider and a Triumph TR6) but this one blew my mind.

Anyway I went for a drive today and ended up on a secluded section of motorway so needless to say I decided to see what she had !!!

Went through the gears hitting vtec each time but when I changed up to sixth and brought her up to the 6000rpm vtec point she "stalled /died, lost power and would not go into vtec... It was like something was holding her back.

There were no mad engine noises, no warning lights,no overheating, nothing...

I got a bit nervous after that and decided to head for home, there were no further problems and it drove well all the way home.

When I got home I decided to take a look at the air filter, oil level etc.. (even though the previous owner said it had been serviced about 3000 miles ago ??)
The air filter is very dirty and needs to be changed straight away (Have ordered a new one)
The oil looks clean and is at the right level
I did not check the spark plugs but have decided to do a full service now myself.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this or can you shine a light on what it might be

Cheers...

John

Maybe you hit the top speed limiter?

Can you tell us what mph/kph you were at when she didn't want to go anymore? You might of hit the top speed of the car. I'm not sure who ever maxed out a S, but you might be one that can. Glad you are enjoying your S and make sure to check that oil level every 1,000 miles

Top speed is 154 I've done it many of times in a lot of stock s2ks but the stock gearing is capable of 170+mph

Well if the engine is cold it won't go into vtec. SInce you said you were in 6th gear though maybe you hit a rev limeter? If it is set at 155mph that is probably around 6k in 6th gear

Ive never been close to 150mph but always assumed top speed to be limited by the redline i.e- 9000 woiuld equal about 150mph in 6th gear in an AP1.

Get your service done and monitor. I would run a fuel system cleaner through incase at some point the past owner let it sit too long and you have some sticky injectors or what have you.

However it wasn't speed or gearing related. And for all the misinformation there is no limiter on the car. It's 'drag limited' not chip.

I'm assuming the motor was all warmed up. Had been driven for about 30 minutes. You may need to do the map-whack for your ap1. As an Ap2 owner I'm not sure about the details on this.
