Hi Everybody
. I'll be picking up my 2008 CR next week! I've tried to do a search but couldn't find an definitive answer.
The car has been sitting in the showroom all this time and it has not been driven (< 10 miles). The build date of the car must be around the fall of 2007 so that means the engine oil in the car is close to 2 years old
I want to ask the dealer to change the oil before pick up but I'm sure they will not have the special Honda "break in oil". Should I ask them to change it anyway and then add something like Valvoline MaxLife Engine Protector on my own or should I just keep the original oil. If I keep the original oil, should I change it out at the recommened 7500 miles? I can't imagine using 2 year old oil for 7500 miles could be a good thing no matter how "special" it is.

Do NOT use synthetic oil during break-in.
Use a cheap dino 10W-30.
Check the oil level frequently!
Add cheap dino 10W-30 during break-in when needed.
I would keep the level up and not wait for it to reach the lowest X.
Stick to the break-in procedure and maintenance schedule printed in your owners manual.
IIRC syn oils are to be used after 10k-12k miles only.
Btw.. there is NO special Honda break-in oil.
The special ingredient is assembly lube (moly based) used during... (yes!) assembly of the engine and its not a special additive to assist break-in.

Why would so many lubricant companies claim the same, without setting themselves up for legal problems?

I would say there's no need to change the oil, because if the car hasn't been driven then wouldn't it be the same as if the oil was sitting in the bottle for two years? But then again don't listen to me.

I agree with fourless. The only reason to change it is if you own stock in an oil company or you enjoy buying new things--like quarts of oil. Oil does not wear out nor lose its properties sitting in a sealed engine. Nor is it necessary to change oil every 3000 miles under normal use. Old wive's tales, all...so you can go broke sooner.

I'd just leave the factory oil and not be paranoid about it. With less than 10 miles on the oil... I really don't think you're going to do any damage using it.
And check my signature for "Roll Call" and post up your CR number!
