In all my experience at the track, in the company of die-hard BMW people, they love Mobil 1 and swear by it.
I believe one of the biggest advantages synthetic offers is the resistance to breaking down under extreme and constant heat. A traditional oil can break down and cause additional wear to the engine under constant torturing engine heat, like what you can experience at the race track.
I have used Pennzoil Synthetic for many, many years and have had wonderful luck. Neo Synthetic is a new one on me.

If they have been around for 31 years and few have heard of them or used their product -- there's a clue there.

Not to mention that I don't remember any synthetics in the 70s.

Can't decide whether to be dissappointed that I didn't know this or glad someone else is old.

I put in synthetic tranny fluid and I had no belief that it would make any difference that I could perceive. But I could. Immediately, it shifted more smoothly. Not a lot but I could tell. so I am in favor of synthetics for that. As for motor oil, I think the main advantage is that if you mess up it might be more forgiving, I don't really know.

NEO Oil has been around for years and is in my opinion one of if not the best synthetic oil out there. Many tuners such as JUN sware by the stuff and we have had nothing but great experiences with it the past 3 years that we have been using it. The price is a bit high but if you are an all out type person or a racer its worth the price. If you are just driving around town stick to Mobile 1.

Or if you own a Porsche or Corvette...

Mobil 1 is still the standard. If it outperforms Mobil 1, is it necessary? LeMans has been won on Mobil 1...

For automotive racing, Redline Oils and Motul are the defacto standard.

The only time I've ever heard of NEO being used is from JUN USA. The biggest reason some people think NEO is good is because they come in ridiculously low weights that some people think is beneficial for drag racing. However, the sheer strengths of these low weights are also compromised. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is lying. This also goes along with the broad low-high temperature ratings of some oils- for example, a 10w50 or 15w60, which uses fillers to create the range. The more fillers, the less sheer strength under duress. Generally, the limit for a good temp range oil is about 30, for example a 5w30, a 20w50, or a 15w50 would be the normal limit. Zero ratings with no hot ratings are garbage for street use- a 0w oil, for example, and a zero rated oil with a hot rating is marginal at best, like a 0w30.

Hope that helps you Mingster...
