Default Need some input!

My car burns way too much oil. it's an 01 and has ~178,000 miles. I've noticed during past several oil changes that it has consumed about 2~3 quarts of oil. I use mobil 1 syn with oem filter. Today I checked my oil and its already slightly below "L" after only 2,000 miles since last change. what do you guys think? I know AP1 is known to burn oil but my car seems a little too excessive!

Thanks!

Prepare for all the "don't use mobil 1"

It does sound like this sentiment is true in your situation, especially if you much time in vtec. You have a high-mileage car and should consider switching over to something less prone to consumption.

I'll leave the recommendations up to others, but this has been well-documented for ap1 models.

If that doesn't work then you're looking at a ring/hone job and/or new valve guides...

Car is burning exactly the amount of oil I would expect. You have an AP1 with high miles. Get a thicker oil and stay out of vtec.

OR

Top it up regularly. Expect 1qt per 1K miles.

just to make sure, do a compression test to rule out other things.

other than that, welcome to the 1 quart per 1K miles club.

krank vents did stop the oil consumption for me, but i didn't like the vacuum it was creating, sucking in on the seals everywhere.

I agree. I would bet there is some cylinder wear that accounts for this higher burn.

If it's making the power as it should, and you dont see bluesmoke out the back, then dont worry about it and keep on truckin, why spend money when u dont have to. Just keep topping it off.
