I feel like this should be obvious... but just in case:
When it came on, you should have checked the dipstick before adding oil.
Once you added oil, and still didn't get a reading on the stick, add more before starting it or doing anything. The stick goes into the sump, its not like the oil is being secretly hidden somewhere in a top secret attempt to get you to over fill it. If there is nothing on the dip stick... add more.
You shouldn't have been able to burn an entire serving of oil in a regular time period, so either you have a leak somewhere, or you haven't changed that oil in ages...
So change your oil, and filter with new oil. (All the way to the dipstick reading this time) run it in a stationary place for a while and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, drive it for a week, and check the dipstick again.
If its lower than before, you have a leak. If its not -- hope you didnt do any damage and move on. Just keep checking the dipstick.
