Yes, having no airpump will not damage the car.
The problem is this. When you don't have the airpump, you have a CEL. If something else goes wrong with the car that would normally throw a CEL, you'll never know. This could, potentially, be catostrophic to your engine.
so while it may not DIRECTLY cause damage, the side effect of not being able to tell if there is something else wrong with your car could be devastating. personally, i'd not be willing to take such a chance with my $30,000 roadster. but that's just me.
