Need advice: Going to buy a used motor
any advice to inspect a motor that is not connected to a car.
im thinking a compression test and a leak down test? both can be done being out of the car? anything else? thanks

ive seen it done before at least ive seen the compression test done on a motor that was already pulled out of a vehicle. What i think you need is a functional battery and perhaps a starter or something of that sort.

Leak down is easy out of the car. I would also pull the rocker cover to check the retainers, and if all looks good, as a last step cut open the oil filter with the correct tool to see if the engine is making metal.

Compression test, you need to crank the motor, idk if you can do without flywheel in. But leak down test can be done.
