Default mysterious engine oil leak

hello
this happened to a friend, so i hope a few of you guys may have answers for him

his car is leaking oil and he is getting a low reading on the oil gauge before 3000miles

he went to check the car at the dealers and they told him that he does not have a leak of any kind in the engine and that everything is fine

but the problem never got any better, so when he goes to check again , they tell him its probably because he has an aftermarket CAI

symptoms are as follows:
black smoke comes out of his car when he redlines it, and says that his car is not as lively as it used to be

im hopeing that some of you guys are kind enough to give the poor guy some answers

Please tell us how you, he or anyone knows it is "leaking oil." Do you see a puddle or drops of oil under the car? Do you think it is burning oil internally? If so, how much is it using?

You didn't tell us what kind of car your friend has, the reading on the dipstick, and how much oil does it take to bring it up to normal.

Btw, what is the interval in between in which your friend checks the oil level? When you say he is getting a low reading on the oil gauge before 3000miles, it almost sounds like he dun't check it very often

Also, When you say "low reading", that could mean 1/2 quart (U.S.) which I would consider after 3000 miles, low consumption for an S2000. (providing that the car in question is an S2000)

If you had told us that the car in question is losing 2-3 plus quarts after 3000 miles, then I would say that would be a problem.

From what you have told us, I don't see any problem at all. Btw, a lil black smoke coming out of the tail pipes from an S2000 at redline is normal.

1 quart every 1000 miles is "acceptable" oil consumption for AHM. There is a form the dealer can fill out to do a oil consumption test, which documents how much oil is added to the crankcase to bring bring the oil to the top mark over how many miles traveled.

S2000's have been known to use some oil, especially those that saw hard use during break-in and those that spend a large amount of time above 6k RPM.
