MY02 2nd gear intermittent crunch
Hey Fellow S2kI'ers ,
Long time reader, new poster here. I recently bought a MY02 with 38k on the odometer. It's got the dreaded 2nd gear crunch, but it only happens when the cars been on a long trip (atleast that I've noticed).
My question is... After reading all the treads on this subject, how many of you had luck getting rid of the crunch my changing the fluid to the GM synchromesh fluid? Did the crunch ever come back after the change to Synchromesh? Any of you have better luck doing something else?
The car is great, but it kinda sucks having to always have that 1-2 shift on my mind, especially after a long drive. BTW, I came from a MY01 Miata and that tranny had no issues and I've been driving stick for years so it's not a technique thing. Thanks for the advice to come.

I had third gear crunch. Using the GM Friction modified tranny oil has eliminated the crunch. I now occasionally get a "notchy" feeling going into gear, which is not a problem. Be careful when you buy the stuff, most GM dealers don't carry it, but will tell you the regular (non modified) is the same. It will say friction modified on the bottle.
Your other choice is to double clutch, that is when shifting stop in neutral, let out the clutch, then depress the clutch again, and shift into second. This will allow even weak synchros to catch..
