Short of dropping the fuel tank, you can open the fuel pump cover and take a good look inside the tank.

They wouldn't hang around to put the cap back on once they broke the glass.

This. Same thing happened to me with a couple of cars in Chicago.

Sucks, ended up towing it to a trusted shop. They haven't started working on my car yet, they're still waiting for my insurance to send out an estimator to verify the damages. some of you say they might have thought the fuel door knob was the trunk release, I was thinking the same thing. When I first checked, the lid was open but the cap was shut tight, which is odd. They didn't take anything, i think the trunk was unopened because everything was where I left it in my trunk.

When I was in high school (38 years ago), one of the flag girls took a shine to me (drummer in the band) and shortly thereafter took my virginity. Her redneck ex-boyfriend showed up at my Mom's house in his Malibu with friends and nearly destroyed my '66 Mustang that was on jack stands with a bad transmission. They poured sugar and water in the gas tank and as I recall dumped stuff in the carburetor too. I siphoned the gas tank and when the junk came out, ended up dropping the tank to clean it out. I think I had to take the head off to clean it and changed the oil a couple of times as I recall.

Ahhhh, memories of youth and the price we pay for that most rare and special commodity that women own 100% of!
