I did not say they had a lock, but they certainly attract the best talent and have the best facilities. Point is, no one has demonstrated any miracle breakthrough for these products, and I for one tend not to want to be the Beta test-site when a lot of $$ of replacement cost is involved.
Breakthroughs in automotive engineering do not come from Danny Panoz - they come from Ford, his engine supplier.
Same with pharmaceuticals - you need deep pockets to develop, test, and market them.
I tend to also be a student of history, and I have yet to see a miracle oil product come from the likes of Petrolon, zMax, and any number of oil midgets.
The cure for cancer or the taming of fusion power may come from a small group or a lone genius, but it is not likely.

Well, I would have thought that by now my opinion of Mobil1 wuld be clear - it is OK, but not my first choice in a synlube. That goes across the board - Mobil1 makes a good product, but not the best. Since gear oils are infrequently changed, and the better lubes (Red Line, Amsoil, NEO, Motul) are only a few $$'s more, it is a no-brainer to me.
As Voltaire said, "The best is the enemy of the good".
