Is my engine pinging?
I just got the comptech SC w/AC installed on my s2k about a month ago. Today on the drive home from work I was driving with the top up for the first time since I got the SC back, and I heard this strange sound coming from what sounded like just in front of the firewall on the passenger side.
If you read the "Marbles in a jar" thread, It's very similar to that rattle sound, but I think it sounds closer to the crackling sound of someone smoking Cloves cigarettes. The sound happens at around 4k+ rpm, at WOT, in 6th gear. (I have the 4.77 gears installed, so make that 5th for you guys). I have not experimented with other gears to try to replicate the noise. First & second happen too fast to really get a good feel of any odd sounds.
The sound only happens at WOT or very close. say 90-100% throttle.
With a sniffer up my tailpipe on the dyno, I show an A/F ratio of around 12-12.5 in the 4-6k range. The guy at the dyno said my A/F is anywhere from a half to a point richer at the exhaust ports when measured this way, but I digress.
Anyway, what does detonation sound like under boost? Is it safe for me to hammer on the engine to try to replicate the sound to figure out what's going on? Every time I hear it, I instantly back off in fear of grenading the motor.
Thoughts?

I ran for about a month real lean. I couldnt hear knocking over engine noise, but the dyno tech did. Anyhow, I thought the ecu would retard timing or something if you are running to lean.

I'm 110% sure its detonation as I had this when I first got my car back, I bet it only happens when the engine is under load! the plus side is you've noticed it before you have had chance to do any dammage so just get someone to look at your MAP and sort it out ASAP(if you have an aftermarket ecu) if not get one
