When changing my brake pads I noticed that the rubber seal thingie around the caliper piston is mangled and torn. I'm wondering if I should get this fixed or just leave it alone. How much of a problem could this cause?

The same thing happened to my calipers. I just went ahead and had them rebuilt for the peace of mind.
Could the torn piston boots cause problems? Possibly. The piston seals (not boots) which are not visible from the outside might be damaged as well.

Been there - done that: https://www.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.php?...?threadid=51835
I replaced the dust seal and overhauled the caliper at the same time; as spider said, "just for the peace of mind."
