No that should be pressed in further there is something wrong with that axle and the just press in you should be able to do it with a rubber mallet but if I had to guess you axle is hitting your car

If what you are describing here is true then there is 0 chance the diff is making the noise, and any one that would suggest the diff is, is insane.

I missed that but he was also saying that the engine is running fine and the clanking only happens when putting it in gear and trying to move. Either way he needs to get under the car and determine where the noise is coming from.

Non of it makes sense! It sounds and looks like it's a diff/driveshaft related problem, but he also states that it makes the noise when it's out of gear... Something doesn't add up.

I checked mileage when I dropped it off.... so it wasn't the exhaust people

Lemme explain... when loading onto the flat bed, the vehicle was making the clanking sound while idling, but the time between "clanks" was around 2 seconds. The vehicle was also at quite an angle at the time, being pulled onto the flat bed

Now the vehicle is my garage, it is no longer making the sound while idling, or when I accelerate out of gear - it only does it when put in gear - as heard in the sound clip.

I'll hopefully be able to get under the vehicle this weekend.

Differential. Something popped inside of it. If that 1/2 shaft is popped out from the diff then something inside broke.

I think when they were removing your exuast the pulled on the axle some how and pulled it out if you try pushing it back in you may just be lucky

For something as easy as I'm saying I don't know why you havnt tried it yet

An update.

I got under the car this evening, the drive shaft is turning, and therefore power is being transferred to the diff, it doesn't look like there are any problems there as it turns smoothly.

It looks, and feels like the sound is coming from the diff.

Strangely, when you turn the car on - for about 10 seconds it does the clanking sound, and then idles and revs fine OUT of gear... after these 10 seconds, it only does it while in gear - is there an explanation to for it doing this? (bare in mind everything I learnt about cars is from my S2000 - so not to mechanical). I can also reproduce this by turning off the car and starting it again.

Lastly - I'm assuming there's no way of estimating a cost to repair without taking it out?

You can pick up a decent, used diff anywhere from $500 to $1000. Not sure about cost of a rebuild but most people just tend to replace it.
