Default More spindle nut info

Edit: I've been corrected...this is not actually a TSB...it's Service News article.

The issue with the clicking sound coming from the rear axles is pretty thoroughly covered on the forum, but I wanted to post up on a service bulletin my dealer gave me when I brought my car to have the spindle nuts replaced. They gave me a copy of a January 2005 TSB that advises to not only replace the spindle nuts, but to also grease the outboard joint of the halfshaft where it meets the wheel hub. This is a little more work than the older TSB suggests. I haven't seen this particular TSB posted here before so I figured I'd put it up.

Hope this helps anyone else with the clicking rear end.

This TSB doesn't mention the revised torque of 220 ft lbs.

I noticed that as well. My interpretation is, because this TSB is newer, Honda is setting the torque back to 181 lb-ft.

Perhaps the "replace the spindle nut, torque it to 220 lb-ft" plan wasn't working out, or for some reason Honda decided that this new "lubricate the joint AND replace the spindle nut, torque it to 181 lb-ft" is better? Who knows.

The original TSB recommended that it be greased as well.

Don't mean to split hairs here, but I'm pretty sure the old TSB recommended greasing the backside of a new spindle nut and torqueing to 220 lb-ft, while the new TSB recommends greasing the joint between the wheel hub and the halfshaft and also installing a new spindle nut, torqueing to 180 lb-ft.

The new TSB recommends the additional lubrication step that requires a bit more disassembly of the suspension to accomplish.

If you want to do it right:

Grease the face of the nut, and torque it to 220.

Removing the axle and greasing the face is a catch 22 because it allows the alxe to move easier in the races.

IT'S NOT A TSB

I've corrected this many times. Dealers will not find this by looking up TSB's. It is a Service News article. Not a TSB, or a Recall.

Even after doing this procedure the noise can return if the hub is worn.

Sorry for the mixup. I guess I'll leave UTH posts to the experts. Hopefully this didn't jack up my car.

It's not a big deal, but everyone likes to refer to this a a TSB.
