If I'm seeing those pictures correctly, the split retainer on one valve is out of the groove and up the stem almost to the end.
That was indeed a very close call!

Have an 02 at the shop now, he was in because he knows he made the "Money Shift" as we call it in the Metro. He's got 70psi compression, bent valves and all. So it was likely I was going to find some broken retainers. Figured I'd throw up this pic, it is a much clearer example of what to look for when doing routine service.
-The retainer on the LEFT is broken, allowing it to walk up the keepers and hide the valve stem.
-Notice the protrusion of the valve on the RIGHT, which sticks up a healthy distance.

In the picture, the recessed valve end is obvious ... but is the keeper holding its relative position on the valve?
In other words, is the keeper equally as recessed?
The reason I ask is that it's a lot easier to see the keeper than the valve end (on some of the valves at least), and if the keeper slips with the valve, it would make it a lot easier to detect retainer damage.
