Monster Trucks, Planetary Gear, and S2000
I was watching a program on Discovery channel about how Monster Trucks got built and heard something that grabbed my attention. The designer said that due to enormous torque getting generated, they kept breaking even the toughest differential, CV joints, etc. They could find. What interested me was how he solved this problem. Instead of strengthening the transmission, differential, etc., he used a planetary gear at the wheel! A very elegant solution to a problem, I must say.
Since S2K also face a similar problem(in concept only, not in power level), I thought such a system may benefit our car as well. Theoretically, it will lessen the stress on all upstream components, including CV joints, Torsen differential, and 6 speed transmission. All very expensive, but some what weak components when dealing with launching at high RPM or FI engines.
Now, I realize there will be many problems with implementing a practical planetary gears at the wheel in S2K or any small car for that matter: Additional unsprung weight, physical limit to fit the gear, additional frictional loss incurred by the gears, etc. However, I think it's an interesting idea. I am curious as to what others think about this.
