Default Modifying stock airbox

Has anyone done any modifications to the inside of the stock airbox to increase intake of air? I have KN replacement filter and am wondering if I can modify the airbox to increase airflow? The interior of the airbox has a divider under the air intake as well as a small opening under the inlet to the filter into another chamber. Is this "Other chamber" necessary or can this small opening be closed off?

Lots of threads have been posted about this topic. A few people of removed that divider. That "other chamber" is for sound tuning. Blocking it does nothing for performance. The "amount" of air that gets into the airbox is determined by the smallest cross sectional area and the longest length of the system. This would be the intake air horn and the subsequent curved "L-shaped" tube that takes the air into the filter area.

I have tried completely removing all the baffles and snorkels inside the box, but left the front intake horn in place. Didn't realize any power increase. Slightly, barely noticeable deeper sound, that's about it. I may try to block the small square hole for the drivers side chamber to try to got some more intake niose. I've got a few airboxes laying around so I can experiment.

I used the search feature on this forum and found pictures from Japan on modifying the airbox for a CA. They cut a hole on the right side of the air box and routed a duct to the factory hole along the right side of the engine bay leading into the right front fender area.

I have a Spoon snorkel and a duct running from the right side of the stock air box but continued the ducting all the way to my right front air duct. The faux air duct was cut open for the ducting and a screen placed in front of the new opening. The inside of the stock air box the divider was cut out, the "L" shaped diverter removed, and the second chamber blocked. The Air filter was raised a little so air could get all around it easier.

The stock air box was also insulated from heat radiating from the radiator and the front of the engine.

Previously, I had dynoed with the Spoon snorkel. I redynoed my car with the above mod's and it did improve HP's a little.

I'm sure someone else has also done this before. But I don't know if they had the same results as I have had.

No, I blocked it off. Upon re-dynoing, the difference after doing the mods were an increase of +2.3 hp and +1.76 tq.

For $10 bucks in parts so far the best bang for the buck. Some people may say it looks Getto. Other's say if it works it's not Getto.

Aloha,
Mike

2hp is not significant enough to say that you actually made any gains. That difference in hp can be attributed to temp changes, humidity levels, better gas, etc. Did you even do the dyno runs on the same day? Heck the dyno results can vary by as much as 2+hp from one day to the next, one hour to the next.

Now if you're seeing a 4+hp/tq gain, then you might actually be making power..

If I remove the divider, would that put me out of stock autox class and into SP?

Oh yah and also when i dont have my lid on my box, when i hit vtec its really really loud.
