Default mobil tells me to use

What is going on here? I went to mobil's website to look at their new clean line and was like what the heck what do you think is the right oil for me.

They came back with Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-40. This took me for a little shock. Does anyone else know what's going on here? Why would mobil recommend this oil instead of the 10w-30 that Honda recommends? Is there some benefit here that more of an oil guru can tell me.

If you want to check for yourself I'll save you some time.

and wis don't kill me if this is in the wrong section. I wasn't really sure.

Im no expert, but i belive the 5W- 40 is for colder climates. I use the 10W - 30 which Honda does reccomend.

I use Honda recommended Mobil 1 10W/30 in my car and I live on the other side of the penninsula.

5W/40 is not what the manufacturer recommends. However, I doubt it would hurt your car to use it.

Yea I'm probably going to stick with the regular mobil 1 10W-30. I was just curious because Mobil isn't some small company that get specs wrong. I'm sure they know that Honda recommends 10W-30.

Could it be because their 5W-40 is for a little more harsh enviorment in those engines? So when they look at our car they see a high revving car that needs this protection?

I had done the same thing and thought it was a special formulation for trucks and SUVs. It seems however that it is just the name tag slapped on their 5w-40 Mobil 1. I didn't see a "regular" 5w-40. I thought the owner's manual said either 10w-30 or 5w-40 depending on climate, could be wrong though.

I just looked at my 02 manual it says to use 5w-40 if the temperature drops below zero. I imagine that doesn't happen to often in Naples.

0??? It can get that cold???

We've seen snow here twice in the last 100 years I think but that's it nowhere near 0 degrees. Thanks guys. I don't remember seeing 5W-40 in my owners manual. But now it all makes sense.

I use 10w30 year round. We've had temps (even quite recently) get into the -15 to -20 range, and I dont have any trouble.

Before you guys start to slam Mobil, the original poster, each other and the Tooth Fairy, read your owner's manual (or at least the Helm manual). Oh, and this should stop those guys who go screaming down the neighborhood streets waving their oil caps in the air shouting, "SEE, LOOK HERE! THIS IS THE LAW! IT'S SAYS SO RIGHT HERE! 10w30!!!!! NO OTHER OIL WILL DO!"

Honda actually recommends 5W40 as a perfectly acceptable grade of oil to use in this engine. In fact, 5W40 is an "all temperature encompassing" multigrade viscosity that can be used in this engine.
