I used Mobile 1 exclusively for almost 20 years. The reformulated versions that came out periodically were always compromises so Mobile 1 got worse while normal, everyday dino oils became dramatically better. I switched over to Havoline GF-4 dino oil a while back and will never use Mobile 1 again. Redline and Amsoil are the only premium synthetic motor oils I would pay extra for at this point although Valvoline and some others make good products too.

The point is that M1 are making claims that it meets or exceeds GF-4 standards, and it doesn't.

who knows... but either ways. it be a huge problem for mobile one if they didn't meet the standard and they label it as such.

i can't click on the links because i'm in school but does it mention how the cars were tested specifically? i mean 3 thousand miles 5 thousand...? how hard were they driven? i've always used m1 and never had a single problem. i work in a pep boys and i have to say that i am currently looking for a new job because of an oil change i saw. if you change your own oil kuddos for you but if you don't how do you know they are actually putting in the m1? that is the problem i had at my work a customer paid for m1 90 dollar oil change and the tech put in the bulk oil and put the m1 in his box. i thought it was just him but then i saw a couple other techs do it also. i'm not in the financial situation to just tell the customer and then have bad blood at work. can't quit just yet or get fired but it mad me mad thinking if that had ever happend to me. but beware of who you take your car to to get oil changes!

Maybe the Pep Boys bulk oil is of higher standards than M1 and your co-workers were just trying to help? Just kidding...that is a very unfortunate situation and will surely test your courage, honor and integrity. It's your concience. There's a very true saying that the only thing you leave this world with is your reputation.

As far as M1 goes, if you are using it and are happy with it, stay with it. The S2000 is very easy on oils of all varieties. You will not experience a oil related failure.

If you are a M1 user, you might be interested in this recent post by Molakule (tribologist and blender) over on BITOG:

SuperSyn was MObil's standard line of PAO's. Don't concern yourself too much over the labels.

Their advanced line of Group IV's are SpectraSyn:

1. SpectraSyn Plus - 3.6 to 6 cSt - premium low viscosity products

2. SpectraSyn - 2 to 100 cSt PAO for thermal and oxidative stabilibity

3. SpectraSyn Ultra - High Viscosity (150 - 1000 cSt) and Very high viscosity index (VHVI) PAO's with special viscoelastic properties.

So, if I wanted the highest grade group IV base oil in a M1 product, I would look for SpectraSyn somewhere on the bottle.
