MMS at 15%
i know everyone is saying don't switch till 7500 or 10,000 but what if i change to synthetic at 6k? would you stick with regular oil then switch to synthetic on the 2nd oil change at 10-12k.
what can i lose by switching at 6k vs 7500 or 10k? i have 5020 miles on the odo right now with 15% left on the MMS so i figure i have about 1k left before its at 0%.

Only an idiot would extend his oil change interval beyond what Honda specs (so, don't listen to those people). I wouldn't go any longer than 7500 on synthetic. Synthetic is nothing more than an insurance policy. It doesn't change the interval at all. If you go over the specified interval, you can kiss your warranty goodbye too.
I change mine at 5000, longer than the severe duty which is 3200, shorter than the "I'm only keeping the car 2 years" interval of 7500. Some car's get away with really extended intervals, 15,000 miles for instance but, the factory's specing that interval and specing the oil that's supposed to be used.
I owned a BMW 740 for a year, didn't change the oil once. BMW offered free oil changes, THEY wouldn't change it at less than 15K miles or so. It had an MMS too.

Haha, missed that one.
You're ok to switch after the first oil change. The only reason you don't switch early is to let the break-in take place. Once it's broken in, you can use any oil you like. Is it broken in already?

Figure it this way, MY05 were spec'd to change at 3750 for severe. Your engine won't know the difference between 3750 or 5000 miles.
As for the synth, it would work fine, but you may want to run one more "shorter" interval with dino (save $) just because the engine is still wearing in. Won't be catastrophic if you don't, but the extended drains are usually utilized after wear has basically stabilized (typically 8-10K).

Sorry, I think I confused the situation. The synth itself is fine at any point, it won't do any harm.
As for going 7500 miles on the next change, you are right in that gray area for complete wear in. Most who run extended drain would rather the wear particle stabilize completely so there are not additional particles coming from wear-in and longer duration.
There are few AP2 UOA's to draw info from, so it's guess work. Odds are it will make negligible difference at your mileage.
Best way would be change to synth, pull a sample at 4500-5000 miles, and send it in for analysis. If it isn't holding up or has high wear particles, you can have it out by 6K. It would also let you calibrate the oil monitor results against real world application.
