Mixed oil viscosity for top offs?
I know theres a thread about mixing viscosities but doesn't really tend to my question..
Long story short. My brother mixed his oil with my top-off bottle of oil with mine by accident.
He either mixed 5w-30 or 5w-20 in my half full bottle of 10w-30. Both oils are Mobil 1 synthetic.
I don't want to waste completely new oil and was wondering if it would be fine for me to keep using the mixed oil for top-offs? Or should i just pitch the oil and call it a day?

The only true debate is: "Is Mobil1 a synthetic oil"

Period.
No ifs & buts.
There is no evidence at all (as in UOA's) that support the thought that you can't mix 2 brands and /or type of engine oil.
The thought is that in some rare case 2 different brand of oils with their different additives may decrease the effectiveness of one of those additives a little.
At the same time it may increase another.
Different additve packs may occur in same brand oils too, even in same brand & same type of oil if the manufacturer changes its formula.
And they change it without telling anyone!
IMO a bit of 5W-20 is doing that thick (when cold) 10W-30 some good

It is perfectly fine to mix multi-weights

Keep in mind, you still have 4 1/2 quarts of 10w-30 in your motor. 1/2 quart of 5w-30 mixed with 1/2 quart of 10w-30 equals 7 1/2w-30
