oil consumption issues can cause that misfire as well, and consumption likely is worse at those rpms.

If you have a perfect idle warm and cold, the plugs look good and the stumbling happens only at 8+, its almost certainly a fueling issue. I would replace the fuel filter (good maintainance) before looking into the injector cycle.
Start simple and I hope you'll be able to isloate the problem.

Wouldn't it be less expensive though to put the car on a scope to check the ignition system first?

On one of the forums, someone just posted a great DIY on replacing the fuel filter.

But absolutely, scope away.

you really shouldnt gap iridiums due to the sensitive tip on the electrode that can break off. good luck

so were you getting CEL's on the misfire ?, if so what cylinder were the CEL's leading to ?. Once you determine the cylinders affected start by swapping the coil packs between cylinders and see if the CEL's change along with the coil swaps to identify if a problem exists with the coils. You can do the same with the injectors. Most misfires occur due to coil packs, injectors, and plugs.
If you weren't getting CEL's then I don't think it was a misfire as they detect the very slightest misfires. Could you be feeling clutch slippage as opposed to misfiring ?.

Unfortunately no to both questions. As I stated in my post, no CEL's. And the misfire occurs with the gearbox in neutral and just revving the engine. Intermittent as well.
It was proposed that it could be a fuel starvation problem and I should change the fuel filter, but it puzzles me that it's intermittent and in neutral. I would think that the amount of fuel being pumped is far less at 8000rpm in neutral that when in gear at wide open throttle at 8000rpm.
