metal rattle on startup
Hi
just started having this problem, i get a loud hollow metal rattle from the rear end-sounds like its right behind the seats and then moves to the right rear side upon startup and related to engine vibration. lugging the engine causes lots of rattling. it only lasts a few minutes but its really annoying. thinking its the exhaust on suspension/frame? any other ideas?
thanks

Its hard to determine what a rattle might be...but either of you have a test pipe? The O2 sensor dongle can come loose and hit the test pipe which is something that happened to me. Otherwise, some more information is needed to help diagnose the possible issue.

Pinpointing the source of a sound from inside the car is often a fruitless effort. Get a buddy to help. (Or one of your children, this is a bonding exercise.) There are several heat shields under the car all made of rattle-prone sheet metal. Same with the exhaust tips. Know anyone with a lift? I've only been under my '06 and a buddy's '02 and there was nothing loose under either.

I'm willing to bet in my situation at least it's mount related. A heat shield doesn't kick you in the spine like this does.
From your experiences, how long do the stock mounts last? I've never driven or ridden in another S2000 so I have nothing to compare to...but I feel a LOT of engine vibration through the chassis. It reminds me of solid mounts I've had on previous cars.
I assume that a car that's seen lots of city driving & may not have been tuned on a regular basis (rough idle due to IACV or MAP sensor gunk) would show signs of torn mounts earlier than many cars.
I suppose I need to track down a local S2K owner so I can compare cars.

Sounds like a mount would be a good culprit...you should be able to see that from the engine bay though with a little bit of wiggling (Jordan checked mine when I had him do a compression and leak down test a few years back). I'll see if I can find a post about it on the forum...

managed to figure out my problem, an exhaust hanger broke its weld and rattled against the spare tire wheel well. took some poking around to find. and a few burns from the exhaust piping.
thanks for the replies.
