Melted coil pack, unable to remove
Hello everyone, I have a 2003 S2000 that is now just sitting in my garage with the hood up.
I was driving home from work the other day and all of a sudden lost a lot of power and started hearing some unhealthy sounds. Almost sounded like I ripped a hole in one of the mufflers. Anyways got it home and checked the codes (cylinder 1 misfire, cylinder 3 misfire, random misfires). Opened the hood and checked the fluids, when I removed the dipstick, the oil was smoking. Let it cool for a few hours and started removing the coil packs, #1 was still extremely hot and the head came right off leaving the rest of it melted in the shaft of the engine block. The other 3 came out without issue, although I will also be replacing #3 since it is also reporting misfires.
I stopped by Honda dealership to see if they had any insight or could even quote me a price on removing the coil pack, nothing. Not even an estimate. And they said that they have never even heard of a coil pack melting.
So my friend and I are going to give it another go. Kind of planning to remove the valve cover to get a little better access to the side of the coil pack and use a heat gun to melt it back down enough to pull it out. Are we going to have to remove the rocker arm assembly? Or disassemble even further? Anyone have any suggestions?
Sorry no pictures but I can post some tonight if interested. It's a sad sight, she looks much better with the hood down.
