I plan on changing the retainers and keepers soon. Do you think in doing that I will prevent a valve from dropping in the future?
Well, that plus not doing any more money shifts.

did you hit the redline?
I was near redline in 3rd when I shifted into 2nd, so yes I hit the redline, very hard at that. It sounded like a freakin F1 car.

This was the first and hopefully the last money shift I will do on this car.

If you do a leakdown then it can show you how well the valves seal and therefor hopefully show that they aren't bent... if you can swap the retainers over then it should stop the valve from dropping sometimes the cracks aren't even that visible and is best to swap them regardless...

I am not sure if taking the head off and having a look at the head would be necessary unless the valves leak then it might be a good idea just to see how damaged the pistons are or any evidence of piston on valve contact

When shifting keep the motto of making love to the car, not raping it.

Or maybe you have cracked retainers and will drop a valve in the next few months...

To the OP, if you were going to replace them anyway... this might be a good time to do it!

^Yep.

Lots of guys RIP the shit out of their shifter.

You dont have to. Baby the sucker in, it'll go in almost as fast and with a LOT less abuse on the trans.

a similar thing happened to me. It was about a year ago when the over rev happened. with slight bogs only during idle. about 3 months ago the cel came on with multiple misfires. Before this there was never any cels and the car seemed to drive perfect. took it to SOS and found I had some bent valves. The repairs are expensive so i'm not sure what i'm going to do now.
